Luvo Maranti Arts Scholarship(LMAS)
The Luvo Maranti Arts Scholarship (LMAS) was established in 2022 by a young tenor Luvo Maranti from Zwelihle in the Overstrand and is administrated by the Abagold Development Trust.
The goal of the LMAS is to find one arts students per year from the larger overstand community and help that person accomplish their desire of studying arts at the postsecondary level.
Drama and theatre arts, music, painting , sculpture literature architecture, film and dance are among the category.
About Luvo Maranti
Luvo Maranti is former member of Abagold’s Human Resources Department and talented singer received financial support, facilitated by Tim Hedges, Managing Director of the company, to study towards a Diploma in Music Performance (Opera) at UCT’s School of Music. He graduated in 2023. In 2022 he was offered the opportunity to attend a summer school for aspiring opera singers at the International Lyric Academy in Vicenza, Italy. While there, he was selected to play the lead role of Rinuccio in the short Puccini opera, ‘Gianni Schicci’. In 2023 he was offered a similar opportunity to attend master classes and sing the lead in ‘The Tales of Hoffman’ in Charlotte, North Carolina, before heading back to Italy for further performances.
In response to his success, the annual, privately-funded Luvo Maranti Arts Scholarship was launched in 2022 to assist other talented young artists from the region to fulfil their dreams of reaching the top in their field, be that in the visual or performing arts.
First Incubent of the LMAS is a local self-taught visual artist, Ronaldo Bantom, who will be given the opportunity to develop his technique and experiment with various genres of creative expression, while taking marketing, entrepreneurial and other courses online and working as an assistant art teacher at the Hermanus Visual Arts and Design Centre. Luvo now supports the scholarship by means of regular fundraising concerts. He is also a member of the selection panel and will play a mentoring role to new beneficiaries.
Criteria for Eligibility for the Luvo Maranti Arts Scholarship (LMAS)
- Resident through the Overstrand, application from previously disadvantaged communities will be given priority.
- Excellent academic and behaviour school record
- Preliminary enrolment and acceptance at a preferred higher education institution.
