Just Care

They continued with this number of children until Covid started and they were forced to reduce their numbers. During the years of Covid they changed from an aftercare to a full-day education facility. They worked with a local school and taught the school curriculum every day, with great success: all the learners passed their respective grades. They are now back to being an aftercare centre from 12.00pm to 5.00pm. Children are fed there, do homework, engage in sport and are taught life skills.

In 2023 their numbers have climbed to over 100 children once again. Although they originally catered for primary school learners of all ages, they are currently focussing almost exclusively on Foundation Phase and Grade R learners. Since this is ADT’s primary focus area, too, it continues to support Just Care, as it has been doing since 2016, a year after it was founded. The staff are fully qualified and in addition to being served nutritious meals, the children are kept safe and meaningfully occupied. This project serves children from two disadvantaged communities, where there are high levels of unemployment, so the fees paid by the parents and the small government subsidy they receive do not cover the running costs. A further annual subsidy by ADT helps to close the funding gap.
