Sparkle Kids
Sparklekids has received funding from ADT over a period of several years. During that time many young people from local disadvantaged communities were supported by Theo and Angie Krynauw, the founders, and they, in partnership with ADT and other donors, are proud to have seen them graduate in a variety of important disciplines.
However, it has become clear that unless tertiary education is job-related, the hard-won qualifications may not led to meaningful employment. This is why, four years ago, together with a handful of people with a similar vision, they initiated the Overstrand Learning Hub (referred to by some as Sparklekids II).
The students study towards a B Ed (Foundation Phase), Higher Certificate in ECD, and a PGCE – all with a strong chance of employment. This has a direct impact on poverty alleviation, as well as being one of the few initiatives in the Overstrand that empowers disadvantaged people to qualify for decently-remunerated jobs (with benefits).
Over the past year, approximately 70% of Sparklekids' income from donations has gone to the Overstrand Learning Hub, where it is well-managed and distributed to deserving students whose progress is carefully monitored, and this is why in 2023 ADT has sponsored four B ED students (see under Tertiary Bursaries).
In addition, it provided Sparklekids with funding for the registration and university start-up costs for four recently-matriculated students from Qhayiya Secondary School in Zwelihle.
